Lesson Plan: Today we are going to learn about a prophet of God. A prophet is a living person who helps us to know what our Heavenly Father wants us to do. This is Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith was the very first prophet of the latter days.

When he was a young boy, Heavenly Father and Jesus visited him and told him that he was going to build up Jesus's church here on earth.

When he got a little older, an angel showed him where to find the golden plates and then Joseph translated them into the Book of Mormon.

Translating is when someone helps you to understand something that you can't figure out by yourself. The golden plates were written in words that we couldn't read!

So Heavenly Father helped Joseph Smith to write the words in the Book of Mormon so we can read them!

Lesson Application: Sometimes we learn American Sign Language so we can help people who can't hear to understand what we are saying, just like Joseph Smith learned how to translate other languages so we can read the Book of Mormon! Now we are going to play a game called "Simon Signs!" Its just like Simon Says, except we will use Sign Language instead of words!

(Now you can play "Simon Says" with your children, but replace the action words with an action sign like this one which means "dance". You can find the source for this picture as well as several other action signs, by clicking THIS link.)
